From Christmas markets and craft fairs to festive trails and theatre shows, let’s take a look at some of the best options for 2024.

1. Frankfurt Christmas market

Kick off your Christmas season with a trip to Birmingham’s celebrated Frankfurt-style Christmas market. Back for its 24th year, it’s taking place in Victoria Street and New Street from 1 November to 24 December. It’s an unmissable event for shoppers looking for unique gifts and those who love that cheerful, festive atmosphere. Stalls selling food and drink, traditional toys, ornaments and gifts will be lining the streets, and there’s even an ice rink if you enjoy a spot of Christmas skating.

2. Christmas Vintage Craft & Gift Fair

If you prefer a smaller, less crowded scene, head to the vintage craft & gift fair at Arden Hall, Castle Bromwich. Opening from 12-4pm on Sunday 1 December 2024, it’s free to attend and has a fantastic selection of stalls selling locally produced crafts and gifts. There’s also afternoon tea and refreshments, a Santa’s Grotto and live entertainment throughout the afternoon.

3. Jewellery Quarter Christmas Window Trail

Birmingham’s Jewellery Quarter celebrates Christmas with over 60 festive window displays which passersby can enjoy. The trail guide can be downloaded or picked up at a local venue, and there are prizes to be won by voting for your favourite display.

4. Carol services

One way to get firmly into the Christmas spirit is by attending a carol service at your local church. Many venues have services that are free to attend as well as ticketed performances by local choirs throughout advent. If you’re looking for free Christmas things to do in Birmingham, this is a  classic option.

5. National Trust sites

Those with National Trust membership can enjoy the Christmas decorations at one of the properties around Birmingham. Packwood House will be celebrating with a 1920s theme for the 2024-25 season, presenting a festive feast, presents and decorations from the era. There are also Christmas trees in the barnyard and plenty of paths along which to enjoy a wintery stroll.

6. The Tiger Who Came to Tea

If your kids aren’t quite old enough, or don’t have the attention span for a full length panto, why not take them to see The Tiger Who Came to Tea? Playing at Birmingham Town Hall from 26 December 2024 - 5 January 2025, it’s a 55-minute show with no interval, making it the perfect length for little ones.
