7 biscuits to serve a tiger when it comes for tea

If you love Judith Kerr’s book, The Tiger Who Came to Tea, you may have wondered what the tiger liked best out of all the things he eats at Sophie’s house. Perhaps you’ve imagined what you would serve to a tiger if one came to tea at your house? We certainly have - and we’ve thought of seven biscuits that we think a tiger would love to eat at a tea party. See if you agree.

1. Tiger shaped gingerbread

Spiced gingerbread is delicious, especially when it’s fresh out of the oven. We think a tiger would love crunching on this kind of biscuit, especially if it was cut into the shape of a tiger and decorated with stripy icing.

2. Viennese Whirls

Viennese whirls are piped, shortbread-style biscuits filled with jam and buttercream, and would make a delicious treat for a hungry tiger. They even look a little bit stripy because of the way the soft, crumbly biscuit is piped.

3. Toffee cookies

Chewy and substantial, a toffee cookie would give a tiger plenty to sink its teeth into. The chunks of toffee might even keep your striped guest chewing for long enough that you could enjoy a biscuit too - before he ate all the rest!

4. Shortbread

Shortbread is crunchy and crumbly, making it popular with tea party guests everywhere. It’s also great for dunking in tea, if your tiger visitor felt so inclined. What’s more, it’s easy to make, so if the tiger ate all of your biscuits at once, you could whip up some more for yourself once he left.

5. Chocolate Hobnobs

These oaty biscuits are satisfying without being too sweet, and the layer of chocolate makes them extra delicious. Because they’re quite filling biscuits, we think a tiger tea party guest might only need half a packet along with sandwiches, cakes and buns, meaning there might be some left for you.

6. Tiger striped sablé biscuits

Rich, buttery and with a sand-like, crumbly texture, sablé biscuits can be made with a lovely tiger-stripe pattern if you use two separate doughs - one coloured with turmeric and the other with cocoa. These are layered to create the stripy pattern. The only downside is they’re so delicious they’d definitely get eaten in one go.

7. Half moon cookies

Famous in New York bakeries, half moon cookies are lemony flavoured, cake-like treats that are traditionally decorated with black and white icing. You could change the white icing for orange to give them a more tiger-like vibe and decorate with sprinkles. Surely a batch of these would fill up a tiger tummy.
