Be a tiger hero: How you can help save big cats

Tigers are among the world’s most impressive and recognisable big cat species. Yet their populations are under threat, with habitat loss, poaching, and human-wildlife conflict all presenting challenges to their survival. While these magnificent creatures may seem distant from life in the UK, there are lots of ways that we can help to make sure tigers don’t become extinct.

Understanding the plight of tigers

The first step in supporting big cat conservation is understanding why these animals are in trouble. Over the past century, tiger populations have rapidly declined; only around 5,000 are thought to be left in the wild. One of the main threats to their survival is habitat loss - when their homes are destroyed or changed so much by human development or climate change that they can no longer live there. They are also hunted illegally for their fur, teeth, claws and more.

How you can help

It may feel like you can’t do much to help from all the way over here in the UK, but there are several ways you can be a tiger hero:

1. Fundraising

Many worldwide organisations are dedicated to saving big cats. Supporting charities like the Born Free Foundation, WWF and Panthera means that teams in the countries where tigers live can work to restore their habitats, educate communities about living alongside them and combat illegal hunting. Regular donations are a great way to help, as are fundraising activities such as:

Adopting an animal through the organisation’s programme

Hosting a bake sale at school

Taking part in a sponsored walk, swim or bike ride

Selling homemade holiday cards or crafts

Many charities can send you a fundraising pack to help you get started.

Raising awareness through education and creativity

A simple way of helping is to raise awareness about the plight of tigers. Create a poster, give a short talk or write a story about tigers to help you share what you have learned about them with your classmates and friends. It’s an engaging way to educate others and get them to think about how we can protect our planet and endangered animals.

Making sustainable choices

Did you know that the everyday choices we make at home can have an impact on big cat habitats? For example, many products contain palm oil. Oil palm plantations have been responsible for the habitat loss of many creatures in India, Malaysia and other countries where tigers live. You can encourage your family to check labels and choose products that use certified sustainable palm oil.

You can also try to walk or cycle more instead of using the car; recycle paper, cardboard and other waste; and switch off lights, computers and TVs when you’re not using them. This all helps to fight climate change, which is another reason why big cats are losing their habitats.
