Must-see kids’ shows this winter

When the weather is dull and the days are short, finding things to keep the kids occupied can be a challenge. Luckily, there is often plenty to see at your local theatre, and with kids’ shows being more popular than ever, you won’t be short of entertainment. We’ve put together a list of the must-see children’s shows in Dorking this winter, so you can get some dates in the diary.

A Christmas Carol Rehearsed Reading

If you and your kids love a good story, why not head to the Green Room Theatre for a stage adaptation of Dickens’ festive classic, A Christmas Carol? Snuggle up with a mulled wine (there’s a non-alcoholic version for the kids) and a mince pie, and enjoy the chills and cheer of this fantastic tale. The event takes place on Friday 16 December 2022.

Christmas Panto

Pantomime is a fine Christmas tradition, and delights kids of all ages. Dorking’s pantomime this season is Cinderella, the classic rags to riches fairy tale. The handsome Prince Charming is played by Matthew Pagan from music group Collabro, and you can expect plenty of magic, singing, and dancing. The show runs from 17 – 28 December 2022 at Dorking Halls.

The Tiger Who Came to Tea

If you’re looking for things to do in Dorking in January and February, don’t miss the Olivier Award nominated production, The Tiger Who Came to Tea. Based on the best-selling picture book by Judith Kerr, it tells the story of a tiger who arrives at the house of a little girl called Sophie, and proceeds to eat all the food and drink all the drinks before disappearing into the night. There’s magic, sing-along songs and clumsy chaos, and at just 55 minutes long, it’s ideal for children aged three and up. You can catch the show at Dorking Halls from 31 January to 1 February 2023.

The Giraffe Who Wouldn’t Bath

Pre-schoolers love a good story, and you can introduce them to the world of drama at the Yvonne Arnaud Theatre in Guildford with The Giraffe Who Wouldn’t Bath. With an interactive performance, it tells the story of Gerald, a giraffe who doesn’t like water. It’s designed especially for ages 0-4, and there are two sessions available on 17 January.

Circus Spectacular

The circus is always an exciting experience for kids, and the Circus Spectacular at Harlequin Theatre in nearby Redhill is sure to delight. A troupe of top-class artistes will showcase their talents – from juggling to contortion – while magicians provide mystery with their wonderous tricks, and clowns lighten the mood with jokes and humorous antics. The show plays at Redhill’s Harlequin Theatre on 15 February 2023.
