Different tiger subspecies make their homes in different habitats across the world. While the Amur tiger is capable of withstanding the freezing temperatures and snow of Siberia, other subspecies, such as the Sumatran tiger, thrives in tropical forests and freshwater swampland. If you want educational things to do with kids, why not read on to explore the top six tiger habitats around the world?
Deciduous forests
Bengal, Indochinese and Amur tigers can all be found in deciduous forest habitats. A Bengal tiger population can be found in the sal forests of Bandhavgarh National Park, while Indochinese tigers thrive in the tropical and dry broadleaf forests of Myanmar and Thailand. Amur tigers inhabit the dense forests of far eastern Russia.
Mangrove swamps
The world’s largest population of Bengal tigers can be found in the Sundarbans, a mangrove forest that lies where three rivers meet. The area is made up of a complex network of tidal waterways, mudflats and small islands, as well as mangrove forests. Other threatened species such as the Estuarine crocodile and Indian python also call the Sundarbans home.
Freshwater swamp forests
The Sumatran tiger is so-named because it lives exclusively on the island of Sumatra. This has extensive freshwater swamp forests that many of the tigers inhabit. These low-lying forests grow on floodplains that are periodically flooded by the nearby rivers, and are home to the Sunda clouded leopard, Malayan sun bear and several primate species alongside the Sumatran tiger.
Mountains
Many tiger subspecies call mountainous regions their home. The Amur tiger in particular has adapted to the cold, harsh weather of the Sikhote-Alin range in the Russian Far East and Changbai mountains of northeastern China. There’s a diversity of climates here from subtropical regions to coniferous forests at higher altitude. Bengal tigers can also be found in subalpine forests of the Himalayas.
Tropical forests
Malayan tigers live primarily in the tropical forests of states such as Johor, Pahang and Kelantan on the Malay peninsula. These habitats have lush vegetation that provides plenty of cover, as well as a diverse range of wildlife. Sumatran and Bengal tigers often thrive in the dense tropical rainforests of Sumatra and northeastern India respectively, where there is plenty of prey to hunt.
Grasslands
Some Bengal tigers live in grasslands mixed with areas of forest on the Indian subcontinent. These fertile areas are usually near rivers and provide long grass which is perfect for stalking prey.
